Some people are born with talent. It seems to ooze out of their pores. They travel under lucky stars while the rest of us wait and hope that someday our ships will come in. The most lucky are the ones remembered down thru the ages. Homer. DaVinci. The great statesmen, composers and musicians of centuries past.
The Marx Brothers were incredibly talented. Even today, more than 70 years after their run of fame, Groucho, Harpo, Chico (and to a lesser extent Zeppo) will make you laugh (just watch any of their early classic movies).
There’s an old saying “everything that comes around, goes around” — in doing a little net-based research for an interview with gifted (and extremely talented) Chinese pianist Yuja Wang, I bumped into YouTube video of Harpo Marx at the keyboard. Yes, Harpo, not Chico… I’m totally convinced that Harpo’s “performance” must be what inspired The Who early on in the band’s career… What do YOU think?
After I wrapped up the interview with Yuja, she took a brief look at two videos I found on YouTube: the one of Harpo, referenced above, the other of Chico doing one of his little fancy comical piano ditties. She loved them! She laughed out loud, same way I hear others laugh the first time they see the Marx Brothers perform. My personal favorite of all the MXBros movies is “A Night At The Opera” with Kitty Carlisle. Classic. Hilarious. Like I posted recently somewhere here, they just don’t make movies like they used to, except on rare occasions, like “Batman”…
I’ll betcha 100 dollars if Harpo were around today he’d be writing a blog…
“Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.”-Kahil Gibran
