Based upon the old radio scripts, one of the characters, Henry Van Porter was SO OBVIOUSLY the blueprint for Steve Urkel! But the biggest steal is yet to come!

People steal a lot more than content. I was watching a bootleg [stolen] VHS of the old Amos ‘n Andy TV show I picked up for 10 cents at a garage sale. The particular tape I have is Volume 12 VHS The Rare Coin & The Young Girl’s Mother, which was marketed in the past by Showcase Productions of Van Nuys CA. This is the 1951 pilot episode of “The Amos ‘n Andy Show” and includes the introduction of the cast by the producers*** (Charles J. Correll and Freeman F. Gosden). They also explain how they added audeince reaction, which also explains why the sound quality is a little different. The shows were filmed, then the finished product was shown in a movie theater to an audience of about 500 people of mixed races and ages. As they reacted to the gags, etc., the sound was re-recorded along with the “live” audience participation. That track was synced with the film that would be telecast.

In this episode, Kingfish (Tim Moore) cheats Andy (Spencer Williams, Jr.) out of an 1877 antique nickel that he eventually swindles back. Near the end of the episode, Kingfish loudly proclaims in Andy’s direction “You big DUMMY!” which uberobviously is where Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx) lifted his character catch-phrase for the Sanford and Son TV series that was stolen adapted from British TV hit”Steptoe and Son.” Now get out there and find something cool to steal, make it your own, and make money.

***the VHS is of much better quality than this youtube clip!
